A starlit evening under a canopy of trees, poignant poetry of T.S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas, Bob Dylan and Mir, Tom Alter’s eloquent recitation and Uday Chandra’s soulful voice made for a magical ‘Misharan’ at Gyaan Adab Centre.
On Saturday, April 26, 2014 Tom Alter and Uday Chandra presented ‘Mishran’ a program of poetry of T.S. Eliot, Dylan Thomas and Bob Dylan interwoven with the poetry of Mir, in words and music. The program was organized to raise funds for Gyaan Adab’s project Gyaan Ruchi which aims to empower underprivileged women through literature.
The hundred and thirty odd literature aficionados who witnessed Tom Alter’s recitation accompanied by Uday Chandra singing in English and Urdu were transported to a lyrical heaven for the evening.
The poems recited of Eliot, Thomas and Dylan, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”, ‘Fern Hill’ and “My Back Pages”, all dealt with the joy and pain of ageing. The poetry of Mir, whom Ghalib considered the greatest Urdu poet, was interwoven with the English, matching not only thought, but also feeling.
