Cinema Mein Urdu Adab

The melodious poetry of Urdu has been preserved through the years on the silver screen. Hindi cinema has always had a lyrical relationship with the language. With this in mind, Gyaan Adab showcased an evening of music and poetry where the language took on special nuances of its own.

Urdu poet Mumtaz Peerbhoy elucidated about the life of the poets Sahir Ludhianvi, Kaifi Azmi, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Shakeel Badayuni. She wove shayiris written by the poets and spoke about their journey to Hindi cinema.

Nasima Merchant, Gyan Adab’s trustee and patron of the arts, talked about Gulzar, his achievements as a lyricist and poet and his contribution to Indian cinema.

Popular singer Prince Shiraz then took the stage along with his troupe and the audience was transported to yesteryear. Prince Shiraz enthralled listeners with his renditions and performance. Singers Shakeel Shaikh and Rupali Ghogare’s melodious voices brought life to the popular numbers.

The musical evening had all the patrons humming and singing along to evergreen songs like ‘Babuji Dheere Chalna’, ‘Pal do Pal’ and ‘Ae Meri Zohra Zabi’.
