Mukta Sambrani’s Broomrider’s Book of the Dead managed to engulf those present in an evening of emotion and imagination, here at the Centre. Purvi introduced Mukta and her style of writing to the audience, following which there was a small presentation of the drawings by the author. Mukta then called on her parents to launch the book.
The book rests on the premise that an unknown author called Anna Albuquar wrote a book that remained unpublished, was lost and was pieced together when found in parts at a peanut vendor’s stall in Mumbai. Broomrider’s Book of the Dead is about time, loss and memory. It brings to mind the question, what happens to unknown authors who leave behind unpublished works? Could we be eating peanuts and ‘chanajorgaram’ on fragments of what could have been the novel of the century?
Following the launch, Mukta took part in a reading with Vibha Nair and Sonal Thakur, using excerpts and scenes from the book. Mr. Khare had a quick Q&A session with the author, after which the floor was thrown open to the audience, marking the beginning of yet another author’s journey with a wonderful new book.
