Revolutionary Road was screened on the evening of 6th August 2015, Thursday in association with British Council, Pune. The movie marked the continuation of a series of films presented by the British Council that will showcase an exciting range of British cinema.
Based on Richard Yates’ debut novel by the same name, Revolutionary Road depicts the story of a young couple living in a Connecticut suburb during the mid-1950s and their struggle to come to terms with their personal problems while trying to raise their two children. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet and Michael Shannon, the film was nominated for three Oscars, which led to Kate Winslet winning the Golden Globe award for the Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture.
The couple’s frustration is registered from the start in the movie, with an explosive row driving home after a local amateur dramatic performance starring the actress had gone hopelessly wrong. It is evident that they hate each other, and everything thereafter is a cover-up, a sweeping of bad faith under the carpet.
Renowned author Richard Yates shone bright upon the publication of this novel- which was nominated for the National Book Award in 1961. It drew unbridled praise and branded Yates an important, new writer. Renowned author Kurt Vonnegut claimed that Revolutionary Road was The Great Gatsby of his time.
