ABOUT THE EVENT
The Book Club met this month to discuss A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. The discussion was led by Sunita Shetty. The event began with Sunita introducing Ove – an angry yet lovable man whose world changes entirely when new neighbors shift in who are particularly noisy. This is Parvaneh and her family, who bring in an ethnic perspective without it being well over the top. Ove’s curmudgeon exterior is slowly peeled away, through the use of alternating flashback chapters and mundane episodes in current-day, revealing a loving, solid man who has learned the troubles of the world and come out hardened; a diamond in the rough.
This was followed by picking out sections of the book that showed the beauty of the character and gave us a little peep into the mind of the author. Fredrik Backman portrays Ove as a man of paradoxes; who’s words say one thing but his actions reflect another. Sunita then read sections of the book with great expression, giving life to the story. A certain line from the play seems to speak to our hearts, when Fredrik Backman says,
“Men are what they are because of what they do. Not what they say.”
The trailer of the motion picture based on the book, directed and starring Tom Hanks, was screened next, followed by a Q&A session.
