At The Book Club Pune session on Sunday 6th September 2020, Satish Khot led the review of the book – Love in the Time of Cholera by Colombian Nobel prize winning author Gabriel García Márquez. Satish did a wonderful job in introducing the listeners to Márquez and his style of writing before going through the plot.

The story, which treats the theme of undying love, takes place between the late 1870s and the early 1930s in a South American community troubled by wars and outbreaks of cholera. It is a tale of two lovers, artistic Florentino Ariza and wealthy Fermina Daza, who reunite after a lifetime apart. The book has been called a masterpiece of sensuous prose because of Márquez’s ability to paint a rich description of textures, sensual pleasures, tastes, and smells associated with living in a particular place at a particular time.

The discussion that followed the review was varied and interesting. The listeners were intrigued by the writer’s depiction of love. There was great appreciation for Márquez’s style of writing. Satish along with Gautam and Suyash did a great job in providing insights to the various themes that the book threw up. A wonderful evening spent on a wonderful book!
