Novelist, short-story writer and dramatist – Munshi Premchand – was lauded with the title ‘Upanyas Samrat’ by his contemporaries. Gyaan Adab on 13th July celebrated the works of Premchand on account of his 140th birth anniversary.
Our panelists – Vijaya Tecksinghani, Nasima Merchant, Mumtaz Peerbhoy, Kanchan Tripathi and Sushmeet Ahuja – brought to us an informative account of the writer’s life and introduced our audiences to his lesser-known stories.
The event began with a warm welcome by our compère Vijaya Tecksinghani. The baton was passed on to Nasima Merchant who took us through the writer’s life, his influence on Indian cinema and his acute understanding of human psychology which comes to the fore in his stories.
Next we had Kanchan Tripathi narrate his story Mantra, followed by Sushmeet Ahuja who narrated Bandh Darwaza and lastly Mumtaz Perbhoy who presented a brilliant reading of Premchand’s Chamatkaar. The event came to a close with Kanchan Tripathi’s story-telling of Ram Leela by the celebrated author. This rendition collectively moved our audiences who were with us from various parts of the country.
