Firaq Gorakhpuri: Poet of Pain and Ecstasy

Gyaan Adab hosted an evening celebrating and remembering the timeless work of Gnanpith awardee, and Padma Bhushan Firaq Gorakhpuri.

The eveninng was facilitated by our very own in-house Guldasta-e-Urdu committee Nasima Merchant, Kanchan Tripathi and Mumtaz Peerbhoy.

One of the most noted contemporary writer and poet of his time, Raghupathi Sahay was better known by his pen name Firaq Gorakhpuri. He was well-versed in English, Persian and Urdu and showed great promise for literature early in life. His contemporaries were Urdu poets like Allama Iqbal, Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Sahir Ludhianvi. He was awarded the first ever Jnanpith for Urdu literature in 1969 and the Padma Bhushan in 1968.
