The Spirit of Mumbai
Gyaan Adab celebrates the Spirit of Mumbai (our sister city) with art and poetry. Featuring the painter-poet Anjali Purohit and poets Menka Shivdasani, Pervin Saket and Smita Sahay!
Exhibition: FROM THE CITY OF THE EARTHMOVERS – Some Retrievals, Some Remainders, Some Reminders.
(Inauguration at 6 pm. The exhibition will be on from 17th October-23rd October, 2015)
Anjali Purohit is an artist and a writer based in Mumbai. She has been exhibiting her paintings in India and abroad for the past 15 years. This exhibition tries to record and retrieve that which we are losing in the process of this city’s transformation. Her paintings seek to portray a few reminders from the margins and from the marginalized.
Through her poems, Smita Sahay has attempted to capture the city’s spirit. In one poem, she talks about the monsoon and the unending construction work; in another, she explores the love story between Pune and Mumbai. Her work has appeared in various national, international anthologies and journals such as Muse India, Cha Journal and the Pedestal Magazine, among others. She is also a part of the core team of Cappuccino Readings, Mumbai.
Menka Shivdasani is the organizer of the annual poetry festival at the Kitab Khana book store in Mumbai. Her first book of poems Nirvana at Ten Rupees was published by Adil Jussawalla in 1990. This was followed by other volumes. Her poems have appeared in Poetry Review (London), 60 Indian Poets (Penguin India) and Poetry Wales Fulcrum (USA). She will be reading from her three poetry collections.
Pervin Saket is the author of a collection of poems ‘A Tinge of Turmeric’. Her work has been published in Platform, Kritya and Earthern Lamp Journal, among others. For the evening, Pervin’s poetry will transcend the space between the personal and the political, giving the forgotten and ignored a voice.
The programme will begin with an inauguration of the exhibition at 6 pm and followed by the poetry reading session.
