The Ivory Throne by Manu Pillai.
Presenter : Shanti Menon

About the Book:

Manu S. Pillai’s first book, published when he was 26 years old, won the 2016 Tata Prize for best first work of non-fiction and the 2017 Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar.  Against a backdrop of the expansion of colonialism, the slow erosion of the matrilineal kinship system and the breakdown of one of the most rigid caste hierarchies in India, the book narrates the stories of two cousins who were the last “Maharanis” of Travancore.  In narrating their unusual lives, Manu Pillai describes a transformative period in the history of Travancore, the erstwhile princely state that was unified with Cochin and Malabar to form Kerala.

About the Author: Manu Pillai was educated at Fergusson College, Pune and King’s College, London. He has worked with Shashi Tharoor and Lord Karan Bilimoria. He has been a researcher with BBC and is now a full time historian and writer.

About the Presenter: Shanti Menon is on the Board of Mai Family Services, a community based organization that works with survivors of domestic abuse in the South Asian community in Metro Detroit, Michigan. Her interests lie in the intersection of gender, caste/race/ethnicity and class and how these shape the way people relate to the world
