Based heavily on Carlyle's history of the French revolution, this well-known historical novel deals with the plight of Dr. Manette, his daughter Lucie, her husband Charles Darnay and their close friends, who are all caught in the turmoil of the French Revolution of 1789. Dickens weaves their story with all the horrors of what preceded the Revolution and what followed during the reign of terror. By comparing London with Paris, he shows that similar conditions prevail in both France and England. The novel has a really sensational end, which though sentimental and melodramatic is gripping and powerful.

Charles Dickens’ fiction had several artistic flaws, nevertheless his immense popularity had no peer in the literary world. He was an extraordinary story teller, writing almost all his novels in serial form, creating a lot of suspense. His grim exposé of the many problems of his time led to tangible social reforms. In all he wrote about fifteen major novels and gave superb public readings from them.
