ABOUT THE EVENT
In honour of the Bard’s birthday, the students of Symbiosis school of Liberal Arts performed a play inspired by the Shakespearean pastoral comedy ‘As You like It’ in a Nautanki style.
“All the world’s a stage,
And all the men and women merely players:
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts.”
― William Shakespeare, As You Like It.
The play is set in Duchy in France, but most of the action takes place in a location called the Forest of Arden. As You Like It follows its heroine Rosalind as she flees persecution in her uncle’s court, accompanied by her cousin Celia to find safety and, eventually, love, in the Forest of Arden.
Nautanki is one of the most popular folk operatic theater performance forms of South Asia, particularly in northern India. Nautanki performances are operas based on a popular folk theme derived from romantic tales, mythologies, or biographies of local heroes.
After a brief discussion of the various forms and styles of literature and performances, there was a quiz that was taken over by Mr. Chetan Shetty on Shakespeare and his works.
The audience enjoyed the evening and it ended on a great note.
