The amalgamation of poetry , dance, drama and music based on some of the macabre poems of Edgar Allen Poe, the master of Gothic literature to celebrate his birth anniversary at Gyaan Adab on 22nd Jan 15 was an out of the world experience.
The dark screen in the background with a headless mannequin on the stage was a perfect setting heralding the thrills and chills that were to follow.
Even the branches of the trees in Gyaan Adab swayed in unison to the eerie music and shed their leaves in silent rapport.
The first item, recitation of the poem The Bridal Ballad by Priyanka Menon set the mood with the repetition of the ironic line “I’m happy.”
Forceful recitation of the poem The Bells by Apurv Inamdar with varying intonation stressing the word “Bells” repeatedly gave the audience the actual feel of the different sounds of bells from a joyous wedding to a mournful funeral.
“Silently Screaming” written and directed by Divya Mangwani based on Poe’s work “Tell Tale Heart, was well enacted in a dramatic form by Neeti Pherwani. The strangling of the head(imaginative) of the mannequin with a scarf and dismantling his limbs by the protagonist , the harping on the word “madness”, and the sound effect of the thumping of heart beats in the background created an eerie atmosphere befitting the narration.
Chandrakant Redican’s powerful recitation of the famous poem “The Raven” was nothing short of awesome. The repetition of the word “Nevermore” emphasized his sense of guilt and remorse over his deceased beloved.
Dipalle Parmar’s dance performance with graceful movements and dramatic facial expressions displaying intense passion in “The Conquer Worm” was a feast for the eyes.
The creepy tale of a man haunted, tortured and destroyed by his cat was another piece of superb acting and theatrical narration by Sumedh Sarojini, Pooja Kshatriya and Sneha Sarojini. It was enchanting to watch the supple and agile dance postures of the lithesome Pooja enacting the role of the revengeful cat.
Kudos to Moonbeam Factory Theatre, Conscious Care India and Orange Reason theatre groups for putting up this magnificent show with punch and verve and hearty thanks and gratefulness to Gyaan Adab team for providing us members with a delectable novel feast for our eyes and ears.
