Neel Mukherjee’s The Lives of Others
The Discussion will be led by Mukul Ahmed.
The Lives of Others was shortlisted for the 2014 Man Booker Prize
It is set against the backdrop of a turbulent Bengal of 1967- the Naxalite movement in the countryside and the striking factory workers in Calcutta – and traces the lives of members of the Ghosh family, spanning three generations. The author discusses their interpersonal relationships at a level unique to each one but affected by and in turn influencing what happens elsewhere.
The book is “ambitious, rich and compassionate” and captures the essence of a nation in transition.
