‘Broomrider’s Book of the Dead’- Book launch

Gyaan Adab presents the first official pan-India launch of Mukta Sambrani’s Broomrider’s Book of the Dead.

In a time when people rush to be published and celebrated, Mukta Sambrani plays with ideas across a wide range of themes and manages to hold down the fort of storytelling beautifully. Influenced by Doris Lessing’s The Golden Notebook, the book contains her personal and historical voice in various contexts. Presenting the experimental writing in its quintessential essence, the book will be launched with a multimedia presentation, followed by dramatic readings and interaction with the author. Join us at Gyaan Adab as we celebrate the triumph of a writer who has been devoted to her work through thick and thin.

About the book: The book rests on the premise that an unknown author called Anna Albuquar wrote a book that remained unpublished, was lost and was pieced together when found in parts at a peanut vendor’s stall in Mumbai. Broomrider’s Book of the Dead is about time, loss and memory. It brings to mind the question, what happens to unknown authors who leave behind unpublished works? Could we be eating peanuts and ‘chana jor garam’ on fragments of what could have been the novel of the century?

About the author: Mukta Sambrani was born and raised in India where she taught English and worked as a freelance journalist.  She has an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. Her first book of poems, ‘The Woman in this room isn’t lonely’ was published by Writer’s Workshop, Calcutta in 1997. More recently, her work has appeared in Verse, Em Literary, Laundry Pen and anthologies such as Bloodaxe book of contemporary Indian poets, 60 Indian poets and others. The recipient of 2003 Audre Lorde creative writing, she lives in Oakland California, where she is a school administrator.
