LEAVES FROM MY JOURNAL-An art exhibition by Bharati Kapadia

Gyaan Adab invites you to the opening of noted artist Bharati Kapadia art exhibition, Leaves from My Journal. At the opening, the artist will present ‘Untold Stories’, a solo performance which is a collage of numerous memories, ideas, observations, comments, through which the audience can get a glimpse into the mindscape of the artist.

About the art exhibition:
Leaves from My Journal is the consequence of an on-going process. They were born as an idea to begin with, because Bharati’s nomadic soul was on the prowl again. Now and then, she senses this urge in her which prods her to pry herself loose
from existing moorings and venture out into the unknown. After her last body of work Staging the Sets, she had been feeling the need to change the process and the approach to the way she worked. Wanting to travel light so that she could play in greater freedom, she chose to work with smaller format and a restricted colour palette.
In each leaf, the stepping stone is always a fabric form placed within the space of handmade paper. This is the fuel she provides her imagination to begin the process of infusing the quality of life into her work. And the voyage begins.

About the performance:

Untold Stories is a script, a kind of story, non-linear in structure and layered in narrative style, of implicitly connected memories, episodes, ideas, observations, references and comments, ranging from personal to social and political, from topical to historical, fact to fiction and other such. It is a tongue-in-cheek rendition, informal in temper that envisages an oral, performance-based milieu for its presentation.
Myself, a fellow traveller, at this juncture in her life, ventures into the recesses of her mind. Excavating layers of memory and insights gleaned over a lifetime. As she treads deeper into this territory, spaces which define what being human implies, begin to unwind: fact and fallacy, longing and loss, enticement, indictment, death, defiance and quest for freedom get entangled and entwined into a complex network of anecdotes.

About the Artist:

Bharati Kapadia, known for her innovative approach to materials, mediums and techniques in creating her art, has exhibited widely in India and abroad. Her last solo show STAGING THE SETS was shown in Mumbai, Vienna and Munich in 2008.
She has participated in several group exhibitions including THE SEARCH WITHIN showcasing works of 10 Indian and 10 Austrian artists, Pernegg and Salzburg in Austria and National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi and Mumbai in India, 1998; OBJECTS OF WONDER, The Brewster Project, 2003; MAKING AN ENTRANCE curated by Ranjit Hoskote for Kala Ghoda Arts festival, 2000; 8th European Patchwork Meet, Alsace, France. She was invited by Transcultural Exchange, Boston to participate in their 2002 and 2004 international art initiatives, THE COASTER PROJECT and THE TILE PROJECT, and was awarded the Apex Art International Residency, New York, in 2001.
She has initiated and created art related projects and presented slide lectures at art institutions and museums in India and abroad. Her work is in several collections in India, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, UK and USA.
