ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Krishan Chander (1914-1977) was a prolific writer of short stories in Urdu & Hindi. He is also known for novels such as ‘Ek Gadhe ki Atmakatha’, ‘Shikast’, ‘Mitti ke Sanam’ and ‘Gaddar’, and for his screenplays for popular Hindi films such as ‘Mamta’ and ‘Sharafat’.

A member of the Progressive Writer’s Movement and true humanist, Chander imbued his stories with humour and satire even as he relentlessly critiqued topics such as the abuse of power, poverty, the Bengal famine, and the communal barbarism that occurred at the time of Partition. His stories and their social message are relevant even today.
