James Wales: Artist and Antiquarian in the time of Peshwa Sawai Madhavrao
About the Book: This book allows us to enter and witness late 18th century India through the journals and paintings left behind by an observant artist and antiquarian. James Wales came to India and developed a passion for the antiquities of the country. He left copious records and pictures of life in the cities and villages, memoranda of travel in India, ‘horrid’ social customs etc. Soon, India came under British rule, and the world that James Wales saw and depicted simply disappeared. 200 years after his death, his work has finally seen the light of day.
