SUMMARY:India in the Persianate Age by Richard M Eaton
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout the Book: Eaton engages with the interaction between  two “transregional” worlds\, a “Sanskrit” world and a “Persianate” one\, showing that what we call “Indian” today is a blend of several cultures and sub-cultures. What emerges is the portrait of a social landscape at an economic and cultural level rather than a political history of kings\, kingdoms and conquests. In other words\, what it was like to have been living as an ordinary person during that period \nAbout the Author: Richard Maxwell Eaton is a Professor of History at the University of Arizona\, specialising in the social and cultural history of pre-modern India (1000-1800). This is his latest book. \nAbout the Presenter: An alumna of Lady Shri Ram College and Miranda House\, Runa Mukherjee has had a career in the civil services and corporate sector. Reading and art have been her abiding interests. \n\nZoom  Details      https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87684837354?pwd=MHE5MldXUjVYbEptMmUvamZtSSs5Zz09 \nMeeting ID: 876 8483 7354   Passcode: BookClub

SUMMARY:The Ivory Throne by Manu Pillai. Presenter : Shanti Menon
DESCRIPTION:The Ivory Throne by Manu Pillai.\nPresenter : Shanti Menon \nAbout the Book:  \nManu S. Pillai’s first book\, published when he was 26 years old\, won the 2016 Tata Prize for best first work of non-fiction and the 2017 Sahitya Akademi Yuva Puraskar.  Against a backdrop of the expansion of colonialism\, the slow erosion of the matrilineal kinship system and the breakdown of one of the most rigid caste hierarchies in India\, the book narrates the stories of two cousins who were the last “Maharanis” of Travancore.  In narrating their unusual lives\, Manu Pillai describes a transformative period in the history of Travancore\, the erstwhile princely state that was unified with Cochin and Malabar to form Kerala. \nAbout the Author: Manu Pillai was educated at Fergusson College\, Pune and King’s College\, London. He has worked with Shashi Tharoor and Lord Karan Bilimoria. He has been a researcher with BBC and is now a full time historian and writer. \nAbout the Presenter: Shanti Menon is on the Board of Mai Family Services\, a community based organization that works with survivors of domestic abuse in the South Asian community in Metro Detroit\, Michigan. Her interests lie in the intersection of gender\, caste/race/ethnicity and class and how these shape the way people relate to the world \n\nTime: Sep 26\, 2021 06:30 PM India \nJoin Zoom Meeting \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/84744118398?pwd=SFdkK0Z5YzZFYmRmekJNWjhGeVFPUT09 \nMeeting ID: 847 4411 8398  Passcode: BookClub
