SUMMARY:Masks Beneath Masks - A GALE evening of Art and Literature
DESCRIPTION:“Masks we wear\, the many faces for many occasions. Infinite expressions for varied emotions…a hundred different people within one simple person.” \n– Rashmi Bhadkamkar \nAs the first even of GALE (Gyaan Adab Library Evenings) we invite you to \nexhibition of terracotta masks mounted on hand painted boards\, titled ‘Masked in Nature’. The marks give glimpses of faces within nature.\n‘Masked in Nature’ in the artist’s words:\n“Sometimes pebbles turn into faces part or whole\, while roots and earth take on the impressions of an enduring old soul. Trees dance to form flowing hair for a face in the \nRashmi Bhadkamkar\ncloudy sky while tendrils and twigs are outlines of a face to the watchful eye. And when the trees become treated wood and stones turn to broken floor tiles\, I see faces touched by human hands more structured and elaborate\, they seem to my discerning eye. As the water flows\, the earth folds\, and the winds rustles\, these images appear to quickly disappear; just like the fleeting expressions on the faces of you and I.” \nThe idea of a ‘mask’ has intrigued many writers and manifests itself in many popular writings. Gyaan Adab will present readings of excerpts from writings exploring this theme. The readings will be followed by a discussion with the artist.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Letter from an Unknown Woman
DESCRIPTION:  \nGyaan Adab will invites you to a screening and discussion of the film ‘Letter from an Unknown Woman’ directed by Max Ophuls (USA\, 1948) which is based on the novella of the same name by Stefan Zweig. The film will be introduced by Gayatri Chatterjee\, who will also lead a discussion on the film after the screening. \n  \nAbout ‘Letter from an Unknown Woman’: \nThe time: the very beginning of the twentieth century; place: Vienna. \nThe hero is the celebrated pianist Stephen Bard\, quite decadent\, not so much interested in music but only women. A young girl\, Lisa has blossomed into womanhood secretly loving Stephen and bearing his child. But he has no idea of all this. One day he gets a letter from her\, writing from her death bed. This is stuff a typical melodrama is made of. But on a close viewing we realize why Ophuls the great European master made it in Hollywood. He made this film four years after Stephen Zweig committed double suicide with his wife in Rio de Janerio in 1942. A discussion of this film would reveal why. \nAmerican philosopher Stanley Cavell has studied this film for over many years. Considered as one of the finest American films\, Letter from an Unknown Woman is not just a melodrama but a commentary on the Western Civilization. \nGayatri Chatterjee is a film scholar based in Pune. She has taught and lectured widely in India\, the USA and Europe. She is an external faculty at the Film & Television Institute of India. Her book ‘Awara’ (reissued by Penguin in 2003) won the President’s Gold medal (Swarna-Kamal) for the best book on cinema in 1992. Her book ‘Mother India’ (2002) belongs to the BFI film classics series of the British Film Institute. Gayatri’s articles have featured in several edited volumes published nationally and internationally.

SUMMARY:A LIFE Well Lived – A ceramic art exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In the marshy swamps\, with the rising sun\nBlooms the LILY.\nWith its humble beginnings\nThe LILY is pure PRISTINE and perfect\nGraceful in its divinity.\nIt is the flower of day n light\, truth n virtue.\nAs the day wanes it falls and dies\nEncompassing an entire life.\n– Ruby Jhunjhunwala \nGyaan Adab invites you to acclaimed ceramic artist Ruby Jhunjhunwala’s exhibition on the theme of LILIES. The artist through her work has captured the short but meaningful life of the flowers and mirrored its beauty amidst harsh surroundings though her art. At the opening Ruby Jhunjhunwala will give a talk on ‘Ceramic in Art and Industry’ while tracing the importance of the 10\,000 year old craft in preserving the history of the evolution of mankind. After a small introduction to studio pottery and the various techniques used in molding clay by the artist\, the audience will be invited to play clay and let their creativity flow. \nAbout Ruby Jhunjhunwala:\nRuby’s journey with clay started in 1972 with the world renowned Ceramic Artist DANIEL RHODES\, in Alfred\, USA\, followed by a year of training in Delhi Blue Pottery under renowned studio Potters Late Gurcharan Singhji and Mansimran Singh.\nAt present she leads the ADIPA team both in designing and executing murals. \n“I started with the wheel\, the challenge then was to throw 100 mugs a day. Today I look at a vast surface and I instantly visualize a ceramic mural on it. The 4 elements – earth\, fire\, water and air take over my creativity and from a space of oneness flows a ceramic mural encompassing the clients theme and my ‘being’ as an artist. I am only a simple instrument bringing some order to the chaos created when the ‘Elements’ mingle.”
