SUMMARY:Film Screening - Bhopal Diaries and A World Within Four Walls
DESCRIPTION:Gyaan Adab invites you \nto the screening of films \nBHOPAL DIARIES\nand \nA WORLD WITHIN FOUR WALLS\nBhopal Diaries: Bindu\, a naive immigrant woman in Bhopal makes mobile videos of herself talking about everyday incidents and sends it to her husband Mohan – a soldier\, away on duty protecting the nation’s borders. She’s a survivor of the horrific 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy and as a consequence suffers from chronic chest pains. Despite it all\, she maintains a positive outlook and tries to project a happy image. But her joyous facade will collapse soon in the face of a greater tragedy that awaits them.\nA World Within Four Walls: Human beings are fame hungry by nature\, but sometime fame can perturb someone\, disturbing the personal life and hindering privacy. Perhaps Siddiqa Parveen\, the elder daughter of a daily wage earner will be happier than being the world’s tallest living woman if she is not suffering from tremendous agony that pituitary macroadenoma gifted her. Siddiqa’s faith on Allah\, her humanity\, her innate womanly affection towards her nephew and her exasperated view of life enthused the director to make this film. \n  \nABOUT THE DIRECTORS \nArchana Borhade is a director and cinematographer. She worked at Wipro Technologies as a SAP consultant for 2 years before making a career shift to filmmaking in late 2007. She worked on several prestigious Bollywood films\, ranging from low budget indie Aamir to big budget blockbuster\, My Name Is Khan. SUMMARY:Waiting For Naseer
DESCRIPTION:Gyaan Adab in association with Tamaasha Theatre presents\n\n\nWAITING FOR NASEER (Directed by Sapan Saran)\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n“Two actors meet at the Prithvi theatre cafe to catch a show of their favourite actor Naseeruddin Shah’s new play. They are dead. And\, only one of them is entitled to a ticket. They argue\, they compete\, they laugh\, they cry\, they act\, they become friends\, they hope\, they experience silence – all this – while they “wait”. An actor knows how to wait\, like no one else does – all he desires are his moments on stage. In those moments he finds the ability to smile at his ephemeral existence.”\n\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\nThe play is a celebration of theatre\, of acting\, of passion and of life itself … ironically it is being celebrated by two dead men. Waiting For Naseer opened at Prithvi House on 20th and 21st February ‘16 and was received with overwhelming enthusiasm by the audience.\n\n\n \n\n\n \n\n\nABOUT TAMAASHA: Co-founded by Sunil Shanbag and Sapan Saran\, Tamaasha is an exciting theatre company that looks to explore new texts\, new ideas\, new talent\, and new venues for performance. They also engage with a wider idea of theatre through initiatives such as Theatre Jams\, and Reading Theatre\, a series of readings of milestone Indian theatre texts. Tamaasha has had two productions to date- ‘Marriage-ology’ and ‘Blank Page’. Both have emerged from a desire to create idea-driven work. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\nDONATION PASS: 200/-\n\n\n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:The Book Club Meet
DESCRIPTION:The Book Club \nwill meet to discuss \nFLOOD OF FIRE\nby Amitava Ghosh \n\nThe final book in the bestselling Ibis trilogy.\nSunita Shetty will lead the discussion. \n  \n\nThe Ibis trilogy is a work of historical fiction by Amitav Ghosh. It comprises of: Sea of Poppies (2008)\, River of Smoke (2011)\, and Flood of Fire (2015). The story is set in the first half of the 19th century. It deals with the trade of opium between India and China run by the East India Company and the trafficking of coolies to Mauritius. The trilogy gets its name from the ship Ibis\, on board which most of the main characters meet for the first time. \n  \nABOUT THE BOOK: It is 1839 and tension has been rapidly mounting between China and British India following the crackdown on opium smuggling by Beijing. With no resolution in sight\, the colonial government declares war.  Flood of Fire follows a varied cast of characters from India to China\, through the outbreak of the First Opium War and China’s devastating defeat\, to Britain’s seizure of Hong Kong.  Flood of Fire is a thrillingly realised and richly populated novel\, imbued with a wealth of historical detail\, suffused with the magic of place and plotted with verve. It is a beautiful novel in its own right\, and a compelling conclusion to an epic and a sweeping story. \nDo come and bring other book lovers along. \nENTRY FREE! \n
