SUMMARY:Art exhibition- From the city of the Earthmovers
DESCRIPTION:Gyaan Adab celebrates the Spirit of Mumbai (our sister city) with art and poetry. Featuring the painter-poet Anjali Purohit with her exhibition: FROM THE CITY OF THE EARTHMOVERS – Some Retrievals\, Some Remainders\, Some Reminders. \n  \nThe present show\, From the City of the Earthmovers – Some Retrievals\, Some Remainders\, Some Reminders tries to record and retrieve that which we are losing in the process of this city transforming so rapidly. Mills give way to malls\, expansive chawls with teakwood rafters and wide wooden staircases worn down by several generations of footfall make way for cold towers of glass and chrome\, the welcoming Irani cafe at every street corner is eased out by lounges\, restobars and pubs\, communities scatter before the massive JCB earthmovers …and the megapolis carries out many erasures. In the face of this rapid transformation we obliterate many aspects that have symbolized the ethos of the city. \n  \nAbout the artist \nAnjali Purohit is an artist and a writer based in Mumbai. She has been exhibiting her paintings in India and abroad for the past 15 years. This exhibition tries to record and retrieve that which we are losing in the process of this city’s transformation. Her paintings seek to portray a few reminders from the margins and from the marginalized. \n

SUMMARY:Romance of the Ghazal
DESCRIPTION:Gyaan Adab romances the charm of Urdu through an evening of ghazals with the captivating voice of Jawad Askari. \nThough today\, people barely listen to the ghazals of Meer\, Jigar or Iqbal\, the ghazal as a form is still well loved. Thanks to the late Jagjit Singh who insisted that poets wrote simplified ghazals so that they could be understood and appreciated by everyone\, this romantic form got a new lease of life. The celebrated Jawad Askari continues the tradition and reaches out to one and all with his renditions of ghazals. \nAbout the performer \nBorn and brought up in Mumbai\, Jawad Askari hails from an Iranian family. He found his calling in Urdu literature and has never stopped enjoying the language in every way possible.  It lured him towardsmusic as well and he learnt the art of creating and maintaining ‘sur’. His guru was Ustaad Taj Ahmed Khan\, renowned mostly amongst the top class classical singers of India. He has also learnt the art of Persian and Urdu calligraphy and has served 14 years in Hong Kong in different legal government sectors as an Urdu-Persian-Hindi-English (Supreme Court) registered court interpreter. \n  \nENTRY FREE

SUMMARY:The art of Eric Weets
DESCRIPTION:An inspiring exhibition that features the breathtakingly original work of the reclusive Belgian artist Eric Weets who has lived and worked in the shadows of the city of Pune\, creating art that is bound to remain and be appreciated long after his time. \nEric Weets was born in Belgium in 1951. Brought up by his maternal grandparents and severely dyslexic\, he failed at almost everything in school.  He trained as a diamond cutter\, but eked a living doing odd jobs to sustain his growing interest in painting and in jazz and\, later\, in electronic music. He eventually settled in India\, where he met Filomina Pawar who represents him to a world from which he has increasingly withdrawn. \nAccording to Julian Spalding (British art critic & writer)\, Eric Weets is one of those rare people – a genuine original.  Everyone is unique\, just as every ice crystal in a snow drift is unique – but few individuals develop an expressive language that is uniquely their own.\n \nAt the inauguration of the exhibition there will be an audio-visual\, a short film of the artist in the process of his creation and an interactive session with Filomina Pawar\, his partner and promoter. \n The exhibition will remain open from 16th to 22nd January 2016

SUMMARY:Of Land And Sea
DESCRIPTION:ISLAND WORLDS: A Photographic Exhibition by Pankaj Sekhsaria \nThis exhibition is as much a story\, in images\, of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands\, as it is a series of windows through which we look out at a world of mystery and charm that we know so little about. Washed by a rolling green and blue sea this fragile world is rich with startling lyricism. Ancient turtles nesting on desolate beaches\, translucent jellyfish floating in warm tropical waters\, giant rainforest trees holding up the heavens\, whistling teals in the soft light of a reflected moon…turning away is a challenge as we are drawn into vibrantly beautiful island worlds. Specially reproduced on silk and framed elegantly\, these images offer a new aesthetic experience. \nPankaj Sekhsaria grew up in Pune and has been working and researching in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands for the last two decades. He is a freelance journalist\,  academic and author of The Last Wave – an island novel\, a story based in the Andaman Islands. He has authored/edited three other\, non-fiction books\, two of which are based in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. SUMMARY:Kashmir Through A Musical Lens
DESCRIPTION:Kashmir has always been known as a beautiful land cloaked in an air of mysterious beauty. There are many facets of its culture and its poetry by Kashmiri mystics that remain hidden from the public eye. \nThis evening\, the perfect combination of story and song will give you a view of Kashmir through a musical lens. Contemporary songs retaining a traditional flavour of Kashmir will be sung accompanied by some interesting history (and anecdotes) behind each composition. The songs will range from the poetry of Kashmiri Sufi mystic poet Lal Ded\, the love story of Habakhaatoon and King Yusuf Shah Chak to the evergreen Kashmiri classic Bhumbro which tells the story of Yemberzal and Nargis. \nPragnya will be accompanied by Sonic Shori on the bass guitar & Shubhanshu Singh on the lead guitar. The session will be enhanced by traditional Kahwa tea to add to the flavour of the evening. \n\nPragnya Wakhlu is an award winning singer\, songwriter and musician from India. Her songs are about inner reflection and issues she feels strongly about. Her solo act is unique as she makes use of live looping & uses her guitar as a percussive instrument. Known for her powerful vocals\, soulful singing style and deep lyrics\, Pragnya has been making waves on the music scene in India and abroad. She is also the front woman of the Pune-based band “Soul Strings”. \n  \nDONATION PASS: 200/-
