SUMMARY:Dandi Yatra- A Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Gyaan Adab invites you to a photography exhibition ‘Dandi Yatra’ which is a contemporary artist’s march with the aim to retrace the historical “Dandi March – the 387 km walk from Sabarmati to Dandi”\, that launched history’s greatest nonviolent battle\, the civil disobedience campaign\, headed by the father of the nation\, Mahatma Gandhi\, in 1930. \n“My hope behind participating in this march was to better understand Bapu’s thought process behind the unique strategy for challenging the establishment. And eventually to bring it to bear on the field of visual arts to provoke debate and inquiries into the assumptions and ideologies prevalent today. The journey consisted of about 450 km and 25 days of walking through fields\, highways\, riverbeds and swamps. We stopped at the same villages as the first march\, always attempting to stick to the Mahatma’s original route and places of stay.”\n– Chaitanya Guttikar \n  \nThe exhibition will showcase Chaitanya’s photographs printed on Khadi. At the opening\, Chaitanya will showcase images which are not a part of the exhibition and share the story of his journey. He will be in conversation with renowned artist Sujata Dharap about his work and journey. \nAbout Chaitanya: Chaitanya became devoted to creating hand-crafted photographs while pursuing his doctorate in mathematics at Princeton. He first encountered alternative photographic processes in 2007 during a gallery visit in New York and fell in love. In May 2010\, he left his professorial job at the University of Miami to return to India. He is now the director of the Goa Center for Alternative Photography (Goa-CAP). \nThe exhibition will be on till June 4\, 2015 between 10 am and 6.30 pm. The Gallery will remain closed on Sunday.

SUMMARY:On World Music Day
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of World Music Day\, Gyaan Adab presents an evening with talented new singer-songwriter Ché. \nChé is a singer-songwriter-guitarist from Pune. Music is what drives her and makes her happy. The acoustic guitar is close to her heart and she believes that music at its best is when it’s acoustic\, unplugged. She is a big fan of everything fingerpicked. She writes songs to fully comprehend her feelings. The mad mesh of chaos straightens and structures itself out in the songs she writes. Her songs are about love\, loss\, hope joy and also other mundane and pointless things. \nFor this evening\, Ché intends to sing from a personal and vulnerable space; singing songs that unfolded at different phases in her life. Sit back and listen to Ché croon over the guitar\, as melancholic vocal lines blend with soft fingerpicking\, creating a vibe that is perfect for blissful pondering on a rainy day. \n  \nEntry Free

SUMMARY:A Big Indian Story
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of original Kalamkari\, Gond & Bengal Pattachitra art \nGyaan Adab welcomes you to a journey into the heart of India. A journey that takes you to remote corners of the country\, to the home of the gypsies\, the nomads – the tribes of India and their traditional arts and crafts. It will amaze you to see the talent that lies in the hands of these folk artisans who are so untouched by civilization yet can touch you through the thoughts behind their paintings\, sculpture and craft. A journey of dedication\, skill and respect for the age-old arts and crafts. \nA Big Indian Story presents an exhibit featuring three beautiful traditional art forms – Kalamkari from Andhra Pradesh\, Gond from Madhya Pradesh and the Bengal Pattachitra. \n  \nKalamkari – a century old art form from the villages of Andhra Pradesh\, it features intricate paintings created using the ‘Kalam’ a pen made from bamboo fibre. These paintings are made using natural colours extracted from plants. Each painting goes through an elaborate making process starting from preparing the cloth\, outlining\, dyeing to colour filling. \n  \nGond – The work of Gond artists is rooted in their folk tales and culture\, and thus story-telling is a strong element of every painting. The artists use natural colors derived from charcoal\, colored soil\, plant sap\, leaves\, and cow dung. This mystical art form is created by putting together dots and lines. \n  \nBengal Pattachitra – Patachitra or scroll painting of rural Bengal are made by the Patuas\, a branch of the Chitrakar caste. The Patuas are professional artists who make images and paintings for a living. They are also accomplished singers. The mythical narratives\, contemporary tales and folklore painted on scrolls are carried from village to village\, and narration is accompanied by folk songs.\n \nMany of these art forms are shrinking and these gifted artist are facing economic hardships due to lack of support and patronage.  A Big Indian Story\, as part of their mission\, is working towards revival of these art forms by taking their art to a wider audience and ensuring recognition and respectful livelihood for these artisans.  With this\, they hope they will be encouraged to pass on their skills to their next generations thus keeping these beautiful arts alive. \nCome and enjoy the beauty of these art works and support this mission. \n  \nThe exhibition will remain on till July 2\, 2015 \nTimings: 10 am to 6.30 pm

SUMMARY:'Broomrider's Book of the Dead'- Book launch
DESCRIPTION:Gyaan Adab presents the first official pan-India launch of Mukta Sambrani’s Broomrider’s Book of the Dead. \nIn a time when people rush to be published and celebrated\, Mukta Sambrani plays with ideas across a wide range of themes and manages to hold down the fort of storytelling beautifully. Influenced by Doris Lessing’s The Golden Notebook\, the book contains her personal and historical voice in various contexts. Presenting the experimental writing in its quintessential essence\, the book will be launched with a multimedia presentation\, followed by dramatic readings and interaction with the author. Join us at Gyaan Adab as we celebrate the triumph of a writer who has been devoted to her work through thick and thin. \nAbout the book: The book rests on the premise that an unknown author called Anna Albuquar wrote a book that remained unpublished\, was lost and was pieced together when found in parts at a peanut vendor’s stall in Mumbai. Broomrider’s Book of the Dead is about time\, loss and memory. It brings to mind the question\, what happens to unknown authors who leave behind unpublished works? Could we be eating peanuts and ‘chana jor garam’ on fragments of what could have been the novel of the century? \n \nAbout the author: Mukta Sambrani was born and raised in India where she taught English and worked as a freelance journalist.  She has an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. Her first book of poems\, ‘The Woman in this room isn’t lonely’ was published by Writer’s Workshop\, Calcutta in 1997. More recently\, her work has appeared in Verse\, Em Literary\, Laundry Pen and anthologies such as Bloodaxe book of contemporary Indian poets\, 60 Indian poets and others. The recipient of 2003 Audre Lorde creative writing\, she lives in Oakland California\, where she is a school administrator. \nENTRY FREE

Detailed guitar pieces created by him are highlighted by notes as clear as motifs or fine inlay work carefully laid on marble castles. Jazz and Spanish music inspires him the most. Majid is not a ‘note-by-note’ cover player but loves to improvise\, write his own pieces or adapts and fuses a theme/melody. \n  \n \nRandhir Khare lyrics & vocals\nRandhir Khare\, the award winning poet-performer\, is known for exquisite renditions of his poetry which create hauntingly beautiful whirls of sound. He has presented his lyrics with a jazz band and instruments such as the sarod\, santoor\, tabla\, jodiya pawa\, flute\, sax\, clarinet and sambal as well as a number of performances with the Chamber Singers\, a Pune-based choir. His lyrics have been set to music by A.R.Rahman.

SUMMARY:The World of Munshi Premchand
DESCRIPTION:Gyaan Adab celebrates Munshi Premchand’s 135th birth anniversary through an audio-visual presentation and cinematic narratives featuring some of his famous short stories- Boodhi kaki\, Kaffan and Idgah. \nA pioneer of modern Hindi and Urdu fiction\, Munshi Premchand was the first Hindi author to introduce realism in his writings. By pioneering a new form of writing- fiction with a social purpose- he believed literature was a powerful means of educating public opinion. \n \nIt is an ode to his genius that his writings have been translated not only into all Indian languages\, but also Russian\, Chinese\, and many other foreign languages. Written in a very direct and simple style\, the master’s stories made their own magic. His protagonists were always the people he observed around him. With each novel\, each story of Premchand reassures us that humanity is alive and well. \nIn a way\, the reader himself becomes a part of Premchand’s stories\, for all his fictional characters are real. They are living and breathing. Not just\, blank ink on white paper. It is this same magic that the Centre wants to reinstill for the evening.
