SUMMARY:KALIDASA FOR THE 21st CENTURY READER
DESCRIPTION:Mani Rao\nBOOK LAUNCH AND READING:\nKALIDASA FOR THE 21st CENTURY READER\nTranslated by Mani Rao \nMost previous Kãlidãsa translations have been done by scholars\, not by poets. Mani Rao\, a poet brings her own poetic sensibilities to the translations. Most translations focus on what the text means\, but – as Sanskrit readers know – it is actually in the insights\, commentaries and reading-appreciation that the delights of Kãlidãsa emerge. Often\, the language of Kãlidãsa translations tends to be from a bygone era but Mani Rao’s new translation uses language that can be comfortably used on stage.\nMani Rao’s supple\, contemporary translation removes the distance between Kãlidãsa and the modern reader; she helps ‘read’ the poetry for us while remaining loyal to the text. The volume includes the entire Meghadūtam\, Abhijnãna Sãkuntalam\, and selections from Kumãrasambhavam\, Ṛtusaṃhāram\, Vikramorvasíyam and Mãlavikãgnimitram. This is a translation that belongs to today; Kãlidãsa renewed \nThe book will be launched by Sanskrit scholar Dr. Sucheta Paranjpe. \nPRAISE FOR THE BOOK:\n“Mani Rao gives us versions from what she tells us is Kalidasa’s least admired poem – but\, completely reinventing Sanskrit translation\, she also gives us new eyes by which to think on it.”– Almost Island.\n“Immediacy and palpable beauty” — Poetry at Sangam.\nEntry Free

SUMMARY:.hop.skip.jump
DESCRIPTION:Theatre as an art-form is consistently maturing while returning to its infancy. And as such must consistently be revitalized through experimentation and collaborative effort. It was with this is mind as well as the need to bring theatre out of the proscenium to more alternative spaces that Orchestrated Q’Works brought together a bank manager\, a visual artist and a theatre-director-cum-educationist to work on a single concept and create three entirely new pieces of performance. Through workshops\, intense scripting sessions and elaborate discussions – the concept of love was taken apart and remade as something that becomes an invisible line of thought through existence. Thus was born: .hop.skip.jump: With themes ranging from homosexuality to corporate-ism\, these plays bring together drama\, movement\, song\, visual art and poetry to give the audience an intimate theatre experience. \nDaddy Issues\nDirected by Hina Siddiqui \nThere are so many things a father and son share. But at times\, the things that they don’t become the real issue.\nWhat’s a child to do? What’s a dad to say? What difference does it make anyway? \nShaken or Stirred\nDirected by Jaideep Mujumdar \nYou know that moment of doubt we all experience\, just before we chose our path?\nWhat if your girlfriend and your boss decided to hold your hand through it? \nEnough? \nDirected by Mahrukh Bharucha \nThat moment between just right and too much\, when the mind can’t stop talking. Does it matter how much and how true we love? Is love really ever enough? \n  \nAbout Orchestrated Q’Works: \nOQ is a theatre company and artist’s collective that works to raise the creative consciousness of\nsociety through art and performance. Our primary aim is to make artistic ventures come alive by\nproviding training\, infrastructure and platforms for artists of every kind. SUMMARY:Opening of 'Amble - A series of ink drawing on paper'
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Unrehearsed Moments in Image Making \n \nAmble is a series of abstract drawings in ink on paper. The artist\, Ishita Dharap\, attempts to capture the lucidity of the moment an image is conceived. The spontaneity of creation is driven by a restless\, volatile energy. To hold it still and recreate the aesthetic decision is the challenge she celebrates as an image-maker. \nIshita Dharap: \n\nIshita Dharap studied interdisciplinary design at the Srishti School of Art\, Design and Technology\, Bangalore and graduated with a Diploma in Art and Design in 2012. Since then\, she has been drawing\, painting and freelancing in graphic design and illustration. She has had one dual show with her mother\, artist Sujata Dharap\, titled ‘Mother-Daughter I’\, earlier this year.\nIshita has been drawing and painting since she was a child. Drawing has always been her way of responding and reacting to the things happening around her. She is most at ease with ink on paper and so it was through this medium that she chose to explore and experience the nuances of how she creates her images. \nThe highlight of the opening will be a thought provoking discussion between artists of two generations – Sujata and Ishita Dharap. \nEntry Free \nThe exhibition will be on till Thursday\, December 11th\, 2014\nTime: 10 am to 6:30 pm \nFor more details call us on: 020-65217333

SUMMARY:Empty Café
DESCRIPTION:Indian Classical meets Blues-Jazz \nEmpty Café is a Fusion-Funk band and draws heavily from Indian Classical and blues-jazz. Empty Café as a band has been striving to create a new image for ‘fusion music’\, which is very different from the sound that most people associate with it. They believe in actually fusing two genres and instruments together rather than just sticking them onto each other superficially. \nEmpty Café’s EP titled ‘whatever its called’ that was released early 2013 was on #4 on NH7 radio charts on the week of their launch. Tracks off their album were also aired on Los Angeles based radio ‘The Uprising’ KPFK 90.7 FM LA. They performed at the revival of the BandStand Culture in April 2013 to a highly delighted and enthusiastic crowd.\nBeing one of the most promising acts around\, Empty Café tends to blow away audiences with their unique sound and deep know how of two completely varied genres. \n  \n \nGandhaar Amin: Gandhaar\, a flautist born in a musically inclined family has been learning Indian Classical music since he was 5 years old from his father\, Nitin Amin\, who is a professional musician. He has also been learning from the acclaimed Indian Classical vocalist Padma Talwalkar for the past few years. He recently was a part of the team that worked on a Tamil song\, composed by the noted percussionist Sivamani. Gandhar is a flautist and composer with Empty Café. \nVinay Kaushal: Vinay is a composer\, guitar player and music educator. A graduate of Musician’s Institute\, Hollywood\, home to the prestigious GIT in Los Angeles\, Vinay’s playing boasts uniqueness and stylistic versatility. SUMMARY:HARMONY IN HARMONICA
DESCRIPTION:The melodies of evergreen songs evoke nostalgia and take one on a trip down memory lane. SUMMARY:Mi…Ghalib
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of Mirza Ghalib’s birth anniversary\, Gyaan Adab presents Mi…Ghalib\, a play that traces the journey of a young playwright who attempts to portray the life of Mirza Ghalib in his words. The great poet guides him on a spiritual journey full of verses\, intoxication and conflict that seems to intertwine with the writer`s own. This play showcases a mixture of\, inspirations for writing the play\, Ghalib’s life\, his poems\, his confusions in life\, the defeats faced by Ghalib and the writer and most of the pilgrims on the spiritual path\, the art forms emerging from these frustrations and the same art forms posing as a distraction from the spiritual path\, and the desolation faced as a result of all this. The writer and Ghalib seem distinct at times\, at times co-travellers and at times united.\nLanguage: Hindi/ Urdu/ Marathi\nProduced by: Natak Company\, Pune\nWriter: Om Bhutkar\nDirector: Aalok Rajwade\nMusic compositions: Saaket Kanetkar and Jaydeep Vaidya \nDonation pass: 150/-

SUMMARY:The Therapeutic Value of Art

SUMMARY:Yatra - The Journey Called Life
DESCRIPTION:Gyaan Adab invites you to a unique ballet\, Yatra which is based on the four basic ends (purusharthas) of human life\, as recognized by the Hindu tradition: Dharma\, Artha\, Kama and Moksha. It is a fast-paced and lively ballet based on the various stages of the protagonist’s life as he searches for the true meaning of his existence. It reflects upon the futility of holding on to one’s ego and material possessions as well as the ever changing\, transient nature of life. Each stage commands a dance style to bring out its true essence. A variety of dance styles have been thus explored: Bharatnatyam\, Odissi\, Kalaripayattu and Western Contemporary. These styles are set to indo-western fusion music including violin\, drums\, piano\, sarod\, sitar\, flute and sarangi. Dance sequences are interwoven with a brilliantly written script (prose and poetry) by Ravindra Matthadhikari in Hindi. Like a string of pearls\, each stage of life is carefully enacted\, giving ample scope for personal interpretation: \nCuriosity and Learning\nPower and Ambition\nLust and Desire\nAwareness and Introspection\nLove and Liberation \nDonation pass: 150/- \nTo book your passes call Nadia – 9850079911 or Aryaa – 9604349063

SUMMARY:MINDSCAPES - People\, Pictures and Circumstance
DESCRIPTION:“Copper is such a rich metal\, in its raw state it speaks to me\, the artist. Hold a sheet over a flame and ghostly images of earth colours\, red\, blue\, green and purple spread over the sheet\, a beautiful patina buried in its molecules from the day it was conceived in the rocky womb of the earth. I have a passion for this metal. I love to beat and mould\, emboss\, paint and wax it\, then pass the palm of my hand over it to feel the contours of its soul. \nAs a child\, my grandfather\, James Peters\, who lived in the forests of Burhanpur\, in a red brick and wooden house\, told me stories. He was a fantastic storyteller. One might not think it is important to be a storyteller\, but to a child it is everything. My mother would scoff and comment\, ‘There you go James\, spinning one of your yarns. My children will grow up believing the unbelievable.’ And we did. \nDo dragons fly? Twins of the Dragonbird\, I have titled my favourite copper panel. A zebra striped horse in a room\, watched by an intruder. The Dragonbird dancer dances to Grandpa’s tune. He loved to polka to his winding gramophone. A panther slept beneath his dining table and wolves and hyenas howled outside his front door\, while his favourite Brahmani bull was coloured blue for a puja. This inspired Blue Bull bearing a wounded woman\, and the deer that nibbled his custard apple hedge. Fantastic creatures and barely real people inspired his stories\, and my copper pictures.” \n– Ann Delorme \nGYAAN ADAB INVITES YOU TO AN EXHIBITION OF ANN DELORME’S EXTRAORDINARY WORKS IN COPPER WITH PATINA\, ENAMEL AND METALLIC PAINTS. \nMuch of Ann’s copper work is inspired by Hungarian painter and sculptor Blaise\, from whom she has learnt various techniques in patina and enamelling. She has had a show with him in the Hungarian Cultural Centre\, Delhi in 2007\, shortly after having a show of her copper panels in the Birla Art Gallery\, Mumbai in 2007. In 2007she entered the 3rd International Enamel Triennale of Budafok in Hungary. She has submitted my enamel on copper works to the Reliance Harmony Show in 2007 and Mrs. Tina Ambani owns two of her enamel on copper works.\nAnn periodically put up shows of her sculptures and paintings. \nThe exhibition will be in till February 13\, 2015 \nTime: 10 am – 6.30 pm

SUMMARY:A DRAMATIC EVENING OF WORDS & MUSIC
DESCRIPTION:Bringing alive Randhir Khare’s new novel STRANGERS ON THE SHORE \nThe programme features the voices of Saurabh Dalmiya\, Priyanka Menon\, Sumedh Sarojini and Neeti Pherwani who enthrall with their thespian skills\, playing intriguing and hilarious characters shaded with dark humour\, whilst the mood of the evening and the novel is set by the gifted musical trio consisting of Sandhya D’mello (vocals)\, Aubrey Dias (keyboards) and Sunil Rodgers (clarinet/sax/flute). \nThe Novel\nThe tender\, quaintly amusing and hysterical lives of ordinary people who experience the extraordinary in their everyday lives. Their paths cross and re-cross\, dramatically negotiating each other and the myriad lives who touch them\, weaving an intensely emotional and psychological story about people who find themselves and lose themselves in an effort to discover who they really are. \nThe Author\nRandhir Khare\, renowned poet\, writer and folklorist deftly lays bare the average Indian’s obsession with life-long family ties and the tendency to blame parents for any failure that visits his or her life. His robust and compelling fictional narrative is expressed through brilliantly created voices that touch chords deep within.

SUMMARY:Sarir-e-Khamma
DESCRIPTION:The scratching Sound of a Pen \nGyaan Adab invites you to ‘Sarir-e-Khamma’\, an acoustic interactive musical session presented by Highway 61\, where emphasis is on lyrics\, poetry and stories of the songs.\nThoughts become Words and express the need to become eternal on paper.\nWe all write: either as compulsion or passion.\nWe all read what is written but have we tried to hear it? \nThe sound made by that little nib as it meets the sheet of paper tells you more than the words it creates. When the pen screeches fast and loud the words written are sure to create an altercation when read. Soothing silky sound instead\, will nurture an expression soon. The pausing sound of a stopping pen belongs to an intense writer just as the silent sound to the enlightened soul.\nThis sound of a pen signs treaties in one era and recreates the history for another era to read. And to reach as many ears as it can these words merge into the art of melody/music to create sarir-e-khamma. \n \nHighway 61 is a “Sufi Ethnic” music group based in Pune. The band has been creating and performing music since 2008. Their music embodies “Music\, Expression\, Freedom” – a fusion of classic rock with Urdu/Kashmiri lyrics.\nThe band has earned immense recognition since their the first performance at Shanivarwada (Pune) in 2009\, after which they went on to win 10 national rock band competitions.  Highway 61 was featured on NDTV Prime time as a part of their feature “Masters of world music” on 3rd Dec 2014. On the same day Highway 61 shared the stage with international artist Viuex Farka Toure. The band recently finished recording an OST\, ‘Sahibo’ for a film titled 19th January based on Kashmir.\nThe band is currently recording their debut album titled ‘Alif’

SUMMARY:So you want to be published\, huh?
DESCRIPTION:Writer Gouri Dange takes the lid off the ‘mystique’ of being a published writer and all that jazz. Whether you are published\, unpublished\, self-published\, overpublished\, underpublished\, maybe-published\, pretend-published… you will recognize many of your secret ignominies as well as silent triumphs in these hilarious readings from her diary. \nAgents\, publishers\, editors\, illustrators\, fellow-writers\, marketing and accounting execs\, the press\, reviewers\, bookstores\, celeb-guests\, readers…she carpet-bombs the entire three-ringed circus that is Indian publishing.\nThe idea of sharing a laugh with readers and other writers\, aspiring as well as published\, by looking at the absurdities and non sequiturs of the publishing world\, she says\, “is to turn neurotic misery into common grief” (to paraphrase Freud).\nGouri Dange is the author of five books – three fiction and two non-fiction; a book on parenting issues between grown children and their parents and a sequel to Three-Dog Night is in the offing. She has long-running social satire and parenting columns in Pune Mirror and Lounge-Mint. \nEntry Free

SUMMARY:LEAVES FROM MY JOURNAL-An art exhibition by Bharati Kapadia
DESCRIPTION:Gyaan Adab invites you to the opening of noted artist Bharati Kapadia art exhibition\, Leaves from My Journal. At the opening\, the artist will present ‘Untold Stories’\, a solo performance which is a collage of numerous memories\, ideas\, observations\, comments\, through which the audience can get a glimpse into the mindscape of the artist. \nAbout the art exhibition:\nLeaves from My Journal is the consequence of an on-going process. They were born as an idea to begin with\, because Bharati’s nomadic soul was on the prowl again. Now and then\, she senses this urge in her which prods her to pry herself loose\nfrom existing moorings and venture out into the unknown. After her last body of work Staging the Sets\, she had been feeling the need to change the process and the approach to the way she worked. Wanting to travel light so that she could play in greater freedom\, she chose to work with smaller format and a restricted colour palette.\nIn each leaf\, the stepping stone is always a fabric form placed within the space of handmade paper. This is the fuel she provides her imagination to begin the process of infusing the quality of life into her work. And the voyage begins. \nAbout the performance: \nUntold Stories is a script\, a kind of story\, non-linear in structure and layered in narrative style\, of implicitly connected memories\, episodes\, ideas\, observations\, references and comments\, ranging from personal to social and political\, from topical to historical\, fact to fiction and other such. It is a tongue-in-cheek rendition\, informal in temper that envisages an oral\, performance-based milieu for its presentation.\nMyself\, a fellow traveller\, at this juncture in her life\, ventures into the recesses of her mind. Excavating layers of memory and insights gleaned over a lifetime. As she treads deeper into this territory\, spaces which define what being human implies\, begin to unwind: fact and fallacy\, longing and loss\, enticement\, indictment\, death\, defiance and quest for freedom get entangled and entwined into a complex network of anecdotes.\nThis performance is directed by Jim Sarbh. \nAbout the Artist: \nBharati Kapadia\, known for her innovative approach to materials\, mediums and techniques in creating her art\, has exhibited widely in India and abroad. Her last solo show STAGING THE SETS was shown in Mumbai\, Vienna and Munich in 2008.\nShe has participated in several group exhibitions including THE SEARCH WITHIN showcasing works of 10 Indian and 10 Austrian artists\, Pernegg and Salzburg in Austria and National Gallery of Modern Art\, New Delhi and Mumbai in India\, 1998; OBJECTS OF WONDER\, The Brewster Project\, 2003; MAKING AN ENTRANCE curated by Ranjit Hoskote for Kala Ghoda Arts festival\, 2000; 8th European Patchwork Meet\, Alsace\, France. She was invited by Transcultural Exchange\, Boston to participate in their 2002 and 2004 international art initiatives\, THE COASTER PROJECT and THE TILE PROJECT\, and was awarded the Apex Art International Residency\, New York\, in 2001.\nShe has initiated and created art related projects and presented slide lectures at art institutions and museums in India and abroad. Her work is in several collections in India\, Austria\, Germany\, Switzerland\, UK and USA. \nOpening of the art Exhibition with the performance: Saturday\, March 14\, 2015 at 6.30 pm \nThe exhibition will be on till Thursday\, March 19\, 2015

SUMMARY:The Water Bearers by Coppre
DESCRIPTION:A toast to better Health\nGyaan Adab invites you to an exhibition of exquisite copper utility pieces.\nLong before the discovery of plastic and steel\, metals were shaped into objects of everyday utility. They adorned every home\, both affluent and impoverished. \nWhat was utilitarian and pretty was also good for the society\, the family and the individual– both maker and buyer. People were healthy and metals played a role in it.\nCall it traditional wisdom if you will. \nWith the passage of time came convenience and a hurried living style. Plastic and steel became ubiquitous and metals were relegated to the attics or pawned off. What was necessary became redundant. What was indispensable\, replaced. \nThat’s why we bring tradition to you in contours and containers palatable to your tastes\, needs and homes. \nEmbrace traditional wellness and Cool off summer with copper-charged water\n\nCoppre reflects the legacy of metal craftspeople. It is the outcome of a creative collaboration with the Tambat metal craftspeople\, to evolve a contemporary range of copper products that cater to the present while retaining intact\, the heritage craft process.\nCoppre works with the Craftspeople\, by contemporizing their products for contemporary sensibilities thereby making the old relevant in the new. Coppre is social enterprise which is a culmination of a livelihood project initiated by INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) and Forbes Marshall Foundation. The project started in 2011.\nThe core of Coppre is design\, which is Founder and Chief Designer of Coppre\, Rashmi Ranade’s area of expertise. The cofounders are Chhanda Bihari (finance and operations)\, Sudakshina Sinha Banerjee\, (Market Outreach) and Seemantini Mihir (Branding and E-commerce). The project is mentored by craft philanthropist Adhar Mirchandani.\nThe exhibition will open on Friday\, March 20\, 2015 at 6 pm with a talk and presentation on Coppre.\nThe exhibition will remain on till Sunday\, March 22\, 2015\nTimings: 21st March – 11 am to 7 pm 22nd March – 11 am to 2 pm
