SUMMARY:A LIFE Well Lived – A ceramic art exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In the marshy swamps\, with the rising sun\nBlooms the LILY.\nWith its humble beginnings\nThe LILY is pure PRISTINE and perfect\nGraceful in its divinity.\nIt is the flower of day n light\, truth n virtue.\nAs the day wanes it falls and dies\nEncompassing an entire life.\n– Ruby Jhunjhunwala \nGyaan Adab invites you to acclaimed ceramic artist Ruby Jhunjhunwala’s exhibition on the theme of LILIES. The artist through her work has captured the short but meaningful life of the flowers and mirrored its beauty amidst harsh surroundings though her art. At the opening Ruby Jhunjhunwala will give a talk on ‘Ceramic in Art and Industry’ while tracing the importance of the 10\,000 year old craft in preserving the history of the evolution of mankind. After a small introduction to studio pottery and the various techniques used in molding clay by the artist\, the audience will be invited to play clay and let their creativity flow. \nAbout Ruby Jhunjhunwala:\nRuby’s journey with clay started in 1972 with the world renowned Ceramic Artist DANIEL RHODES\, in Alfred\, USA\, followed by a year of training in Delhi Blue Pottery under renowned studio Potters Late Gurcharan Singhji and Mansimran Singh.\nAt present she leads the ADIPA team both in designing and executing murals. \n“I started with the wheel\, the challenge then was to throw 100 mugs a day. Today I look at a vast surface and I instantly visualize a ceramic mural on it. The 4 elements – earth\, fire\, water and air take over my creativity and from a space of oneness flows a ceramic mural encompassing the clients theme and my ‘being’ as an artist. I am only a simple instrument bringing some order to the chaos created when the ‘Elements’ mingle.”

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Letter from an Unknown Woman
DESCRIPTION:  \nGyaan Adab will invites you to a screening and discussion of the film ‘Letter from an Unknown Woman’ directed by Max Ophuls (USA\, 1948) which is based on the novella of the same name by Stefan Zweig. The film will be introduced by Gayatri Chatterjee\, who will also lead a discussion on the film after the screening. \n  \nAbout ‘Letter from an Unknown Woman’: \nThe time: the very beginning of the twentieth century; place: Vienna. \nThe hero is the celebrated pianist Stephen Bard\, quite decadent\, not so much interested in music but only women. A young girl\, Lisa has blossomed into womanhood secretly loving Stephen and bearing his child. But he has no idea of all this. One day he gets a letter from her\, writing from her death bed. This is stuff a typical melodrama is made of. But on a close viewing we realize why Ophuls the great European master made it in Hollywood. He made this film four years after Stephen Zweig committed double suicide with his wife in Rio de Janerio in 1942. A discussion of this film would reveal why. \nAmerican philosopher Stanley Cavell has studied this film for over many years. Considered as one of the finest American films\, Letter from an Unknown Woman is not just a melodrama but a commentary on the Western Civilization. \nGayatri Chatterjee is a film scholar based in Pune. She has taught and lectured widely in India\, the USA and Europe. She is an external faculty at the Film & Television Institute of India. Her book ‘Awara’ (reissued by Penguin in 2003) won the President’s Gold medal (Swarna-Kamal) for the best book on cinema in 1992. Her book ‘Mother India’ (2002) belongs to the BFI film classics series of the British Film Institute. Gayatri’s articles have featured in several edited volumes published nationally and internationally.

SUMMARY:Masked in Nature - Exhibition of Ceramic Masks
DESCRIPTION:“Masks we wear\, the many faces for many occasions. Infinite expressions for varied emotions…a hundred different people within one simple person.” \n– Rashmi Bhadkamkar\nWe invite you to Rashmi Bhadkamkar’s exhibition of terracotta masks mounted on hand painted boards\, titled ‘Masked in Nature’. The marks give glimpses of faces within nature. \n‘Masked in Nature’ in the artist’s words\n“Sometimes pebbles turn into faces part or whole\, while roots and earth take on the impressions of an enduring old soul. Trees dance to form flowing hair for a face in the \nRashmi Bhadkamkar\ncloudy sky while tendrils and twigs are outlines of a face to the watchful eye. And when the trees become treated wood and stones turn to broken floor tiles\, I see faces touched by human hands more structured and elaborate\, they seem to my discerning eye. As the water flows\, the earth folds\, and the winds rustles\, these images appear to quickly disappear; just like the fleeting expressions on the faces of you and I.”

SUMMARY:Poetry Workshop - The gift of the written word
DESCRIPTION:The philosopher Gaston Bachelard tells us\, “The words of the world want to make sentences\,” so we may further ask the questions- “And what do the sentences want to make? What do our sentences want to make? Do they want to make essays? Do they want to make stories? Do they want to run away and become poems perhaps? \nThe gift of the written word is open to all poets and lovers of poetry ages 15 and up. This workshop is designed to encourage questions and to seek a conversation with poets\, their poems\, images and ideas as a means to unlocking our literary talent. This workshop is about finding voice and wings for the sentences that want to run away and become poems. There is tremendous talent within each and every one of us. This workshop will put us in\ntouch with all the literary genius in our midst. \nWe will write poems and possibly\, stories\, essays\, plays or begin work on novels and maybe even epics\, if our lines run away and ask to take those forms. We will read and critique works of world literature\, seek dialog with authors great and small and find inspiration in their lives and works to unlock our hidden talents. We will close the workshop with gift giving. We will hold an open mic and gallery walk at the end of the workshop to share and display the fruits of our labor and give away our precious gifts of the written word to the world through a celebration of voice\, vision and imagination. \nMukta Sambrani\nBiography\nMukta has earned an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. Her work has appeared in journals and anthologies such as Verse\, Em Literary\, Cipactli\, Fourteen Hills\, Hyphen Magazine\, Laundry Pen\, The Scribbler\, Poetry Chain\, Fulcrum\, Bloodaxe book of contemporary Indian poets and Sixty Indian Poets edited by Jeet Thayil\, Sahitya Akademi’s We Speak in Changing Languages\, The Dance of the Peacock\, Suvarnarekha and others. DESCRIPTION:A shared experience of our past\, beyond boundaries\, beyond differences.\nAncient tales from around the world brought alive and retold in a solo performance for the people of Pune.\nby\nRANDHIR KHARE\nAward-winning poet\, folklorist & performer \nIn a divided world\, culture and the creative experience become important nurturing ways by which we can encourage a common sharing that transcends boundaries. Gyaan Adab’s Story Tour tries in an intimate way to rediscover our common heritage through folk tales\, myths and legends. The stories that will be retold on the tour are drawn from traditional communities from all over the world. Though they have emerged from diverse sources\, their similarities are often apparent. This is because they have essentially all come down to us from the depths of time where boundaries did not exist and our planet was a common space for the traffic of thoughts\, ideas\, feelings\, journeys and discoveries.\nThe stories have come from traditional communities belonging to far-flung places on our planet – the Native Americans\, the Incas\, Mayas\, Bushmen\, the great Norse travellers\, the shepherds of the lower Himalayas\, the Mullukurumba hunters\, the Bhils\, the Santhals\, the Muriyas\, the Mariyas\, the Gonds and a host of others – relived and shared in the language of today\, fresh\, vibrant\, excitingly new.\nAnd of course\, finally\, the purpose of The Story Tour is also to create a travelling space of entertainment that celebrates the magical art of storytelling.\nThe stories have been grouped into themes and each performance on the tour presents stories around one theme. The themes are: \nStories Of Creation on Saturday 19th July at GyaanAdab Centre @ 6.30 pm \nHeroes & Heroines on Saturday 26th July at The Loft @ 6.45 pm \nMagical Moments That Changed the World on Saturday 2nd August at The Culture Centre @ 7 pm \nWhen Good Triumphed on Saturday 9th August at British Council Library @ 5.30 pm \nEternal Love Stories on Sunday 10th August at Shisha Café @ 6.30 pm \nGreat Journeys on Saturday 23rd August at Pagdandi @ 4.30 pm \nEnds & Beginnings on Friday 29th August at GyaanAdab Centre @ 6.30 pm \nRandhir Khare has for the last four decades travelled extensively\, collecting stories and song-poems from traditional communities and has spent valuable time bringing them to us in a language that is vibrantly new and dramatic. SUMMARY:So would you like to tell stories? - A Basic Story Telling course
DESCRIPTION:Dates: June 20 – July 12\, 2014\nDays: Fridays and Saturdays\nTimings: 4 pm to 6 pm\nFees: Rs. 2500/-\nAge: 18 + \nFor some people it’s part of their job; as teachers\, parents\, librarians\, healers or in business; but many people want to tell stories simply because they love them and feel compelled to tell them. Whatever the reason\, as soon as you say\, ‘Once upon a time … you step into a long tradition of storytellers. \nStorytelling is social art that begins with a conversation between you and the story. Just like any good conversation\, you need to be interested who you’re talking to\, and you don’t always know what you’re going to say next or how your listener will respond! \nWhether you’ve told many stories before and want to work on your skills\, or whether you’re hoping to tell your first story soon\, in this course\, we’re going to go through a process which will help you\, through a sequence of inner discovery and outward engagement to understand and practice different aspects of storytelling which will help you with any story you would want to tell. \nAs the storyteller Mary-Sue Siegel once said\, “Storytelling is like growing up in public.” Storytellers constantly bare their souls. The listeners too sense how much inner work has preceded the telling. It becomes a measure of how deeply the storyteller has engaged with a story\, and\, equally\, with life. In this way\, who you are is writ large in the stories you choose to tell and how you choose to tell them. \nThe course will be conducted by city based storyteller Peter Viegas
