It explores late twentieth-century society as deftly as it does universal human relationships. Called a tragicomedy by some critics\, it is a witty\, biting\, yet ultimately sincere commentary on what drives people. The heart of the play can be summed up in a few sentences that Louisa Kittredge directs at the audience: “I read somewhere that everybody on this planet is separated by only six other people. Six degrees of separation. . . . It’s a profound thought. . . . How every person is a new door\, opening up into other worlds.” The play was made into a movie starring Will Smith in 1993. \nABOUT THE PRESENTER\nAhmed Karim\, by profession\, is an organizational development consultant. He has an abiding interest in human identity and this is the undertow of his love for a variety of subjects and fields such as Literature\, among others.\nExcerpts from the play will be read by Mohini Khot\, John Kurrien and Ahmed Karim. \nDate: Sunday\, 10 Jan 2021 | Time: 06.30 PM (IST)

DESCRIPTION:Join Zoom Meeting\n\n\n\nZoom Meeting ID: 830 7566 3775\n\nPassword: BookClub\n\n\n\n \nView Event on Facebook\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE BOOK\nIsabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America: how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system\, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beyond race\, class\, or other factors\, there is a powerful caste system that influences people’s lives and behavior and the nation’s fate. Linking the caste systems of America\, India\, and Nazi Germany\, Wilkerson explores eight pillars that underlie caste systems across civilizations. She shows the ways that the insidious undertow of caste is experienced every day. She writes about the effects of this hierarchy on our culture and politics. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nIsabel Wilkerson (born 1961) is an American journalist and the author of The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration and Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. She was the first woman of African-American heritage to win the Pulitzer Prize in journalism. \nABOUT THE PRESENTER\nToronto based literary consultant Meenakshi Alimchandani specialises in South Asian literature and authors. DESCRIPTION:Join Zoom Meeting\n\n\n\nZoom Meeting ID: 819 1918 0628\n\nPassword: BookClub\n\n\n\n \nView Event on Facebook\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE NOVEL\nBased heavily on Carlyle’s history of the French revolution\, this well-known historical novel deals with the plight of Dr. Manette\, his daughter Lucie\, her husband Charles Darnay and their close friends\, who are all caught in the turmoil of the French Revolution of 1789. Dickens weaves their story with all the horrors of what preceded the Revolution and what followed during the reign of terror. By comparing London with Paris\, he shows that similar conditions prevail in both France and England. The novel has a really sensational end\, which though sentimental and melodramatic is gripping and powerful. \nABOUT THE AUTHOR\nCharles Dickens’ fiction had several artistic flaws\, nevertheless his immense popularity had no peer in the literary world. He was an extraordinary story teller\, writing almost all his novels in serial form\, creating a lot of suspense. His grim exposé of the many problems of his time led to tangible social reforms. In all he wrote about fifteen major novels and gave superb public readings from them. \nABOUT THE PRESENTER\nPrashant K. Sinha Ph.D.(Iowa) taught English at Patna University\, Delhi University and the University of Hyderabad before moving to the University of Pune from where he retired as Professor and Head of the Department of English. He continues to publish and to attend seminars and has to his credit 8 books and about 35 articles.
