SUMMARY:Masks Beneath Masks - A GALE evening of Art and Literature
DESCRIPTION:“Masks we wear\, the many faces for many occasions. Infinite expressions for varied emotions…a hundred different people within one simple person.” \n– Rashmi Bhadkamkar \nAs the first even of GALE (Gyaan Adab Library Evenings) we invite you to \nexhibition of terracotta masks mounted on hand painted boards\, titled ‘Masked in Nature’. The marks give glimpses of faces within nature.\n‘Masked in Nature’ in the artist’s words:\n“Sometimes pebbles turn into faces part or whole\, while roots and earth take on the impressions of an enduring old soul. Trees dance to form flowing hair for a face in the \nRashmi Bhadkamkar\ncloudy sky while tendrils and twigs are outlines of a face to the watchful eye. And when the trees become treated wood and stones turn to broken floor tiles\, I see faces touched by human hands more structured and elaborate\, they seem to my discerning eye. As the water flows\, the earth folds\, and the winds rustles\, these images appear to quickly disappear; just like the fleeting expressions on the faces of you and I.” \nThe idea of a ‘mask’ has intrigued many writers and manifests itself in many popular writings. Gyaan Adab will present readings of excerpts from writings exploring this theme. The readings will be followed by a discussion with the artist.

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Letter from an Unknown Woman
DESCRIPTION:  \nGyaan Adab will invites you to a screening and discussion of the film ‘Letter from an Unknown Woman’ directed by Max Ophuls (USA\, 1948) which is based on the novella of the same name by Stefan Zweig. The film will be introduced by Gayatri Chatterjee\, who will also lead a discussion on the film after the screening. \n  \nAbout ‘Letter from an Unknown Woman’: \nThe time: the very beginning of the twentieth century; place: Vienna. \nThe hero is the celebrated pianist Stephen Bard\, quite decadent\, not so much interested in music but only women. A young girl\, Lisa has blossomed into womanhood secretly loving Stephen and bearing his child. But he has no idea of all this. One day he gets a letter from her\, writing from her death bed. This is stuff a typical melodrama is made of. But on a close viewing we realize why Ophuls the great European master made it in Hollywood. He made this film four years after Stephen Zweig committed double suicide with his wife in Rio de Janerio in 1942. A discussion of this film would reveal why. \nAmerican philosopher Stanley Cavell has studied this film for over many years. Considered as one of the finest American films\, Letter from an Unknown Woman is not just a melodrama but a commentary on the Western Civilization. \nGayatri Chatterjee is a film scholar based in Pune. She has taught and lectured widely in India\, the USA and Europe. She is an external faculty at the Film & Television Institute of India. Her book ‘Awara’ (reissued by Penguin in 2003) won the President’s Gold medal (Swarna-Kamal) for the best book on cinema in 1992. Her book ‘Mother India’ (2002) belongs to the BFI film classics series of the British Film Institute. Gayatri’s articles have featured in several edited volumes published nationally and internationally.

SUMMARY:A LIFE Well Lived – A ceramic art exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In the marshy swamps\, with the rising sun\nBlooms the LILY.\nWith its humble beginnings\nThe LILY is pure PRISTINE and perfect\nGraceful in its divinity.\nIt is the flower of day n light\, truth n virtue.\nAs the day wanes it falls and dies\nEncompassing an entire life.\n– Ruby Jhunjhunwala \nGyaan Adab invites you to acclaimed ceramic artist Ruby Jhunjhunwala’s exhibition on the theme of LILIES. The artist through her work has captured the short but meaningful life of the flowers and mirrored its beauty amidst harsh surroundings though her art. At the opening Ruby Jhunjhunwala will give a talk on ‘Ceramic in Art and Industry’ while tracing the importance of the 10\,000 year old craft in preserving the history of the evolution of mankind. After a small introduction to studio pottery and the various techniques used in molding clay by the artist\, the audience will be invited to play clay and let their creativity flow. \nAbout Ruby Jhunjhunwala:\nRuby’s journey with clay started in 1972 with the world renowned Ceramic Artist DANIEL RHODES\, in Alfred\, USA\, followed by a year of training in Delhi Blue Pottery under renowned studio Potters Late Gurcharan Singhji and Mansimran Singh.\nAt present she leads the ADIPA team both in designing and executing murals. \n“I started with the wheel\, the challenge then was to throw 100 mugs a day. Today I look at a vast surface and I instantly visualize a ceramic mural on it. The 4 elements – earth\, fire\, water and air take over my creativity and from a space of oneness flows a ceramic mural encompassing the clients theme and my ‘being’ as an artist. I am only a simple instrument bringing some order to the chaos created when the ‘Elements’ mingle.”

Headed by renowned sitarist Sahana Banerjee\, this group is a conglomeration of various talented artists who have in their own way\, contributed towards the dissemination of our rich and prolific cultural heritage of Indian Classical Music. Sahana conceptualized the effectiveness of these Baithaks as a pragmatic way of achieving the objectives of this noble cultural venture. In such a concert\, unlike a big auditorium based gathering\, the audience gets opportunities of having interaction with the performing artist as they sit in the close vicinity. On one hand the artist feels the oneness of being along with the mood of the spectator and on the other side\, it is very educative on the part of the listener to watch the musician performing from a closer angle. Over a year in age\, Swara Sudha has arranged such recitals almost once in every quarter and various musical luminaries have glorified and enlightened these baithaks through their graceful performance. This group is also committed to uphold the young generation’s musical talents through this initiative. \nwww.sahanabanerjee.com \nwww.hemantpendse.com \nEntry free.

SUMMARY:KALIDASA FOR THE 21st CENTURY READER
DESCRIPTION:Mani Rao\nBOOK LAUNCH AND READING:\nKALIDASA FOR THE 21st CENTURY READER\nTranslated by Mani Rao \nMost previous Kãlidãsa translations have been done by scholars\, not by poets. Mani Rao\, a poet brings her own poetic sensibilities to the translations. Most translations focus on what the text means\, but – as Sanskrit readers know – it is actually in the insights\, commentaries and reading-appreciation that the delights of Kãlidãsa emerge. Often\, the language of Kãlidãsa translations tends to be from a bygone era but Mani Rao’s new translation uses language that can be comfortably used on stage.\nMani Rao’s supple\, contemporary translation removes the distance between Kãlidãsa and the modern reader; she helps ‘read’ the poetry for us while remaining loyal to the text. The volume includes the entire Meghadūtam\, Abhijnãna Sãkuntalam\, and selections from Kumãrasambhavam\, Ṛtusaṃhāram\, Vikramorvasíyam and Mãlavikãgnimitram. This is a translation that belongs to today; Kãlidãsa renewed \nThe book will be launched by Sanskrit scholar Dr. Sucheta Paranjpe. \nPRAISE FOR THE BOOK:\n“Mani Rao gives us versions from what she tells us is Kalidasa’s least admired poem – but\, completely reinventing Sanskrit translation\, she also gives us new eyes by which to think on it.”– Almost Island.\n“Immediacy and palpable beauty” — Poetry at Sangam.\nEntry Free

DESCRIPTION:Theatre as an art-form is consistently maturing while returning to its infancy. And as such must consistently be revitalized through experimentation and collaborative effort. It was with this is mind as well as the need to bring theatre out of the proscenium to more alternative spaces that Orchestrated Q’Works brought together a bank manager\, a visual artist and a theatre-director-cum-educationist to work on a single concept and create three entirely new pieces of performance. Through workshops\, intense scripting sessions and elaborate discussions – the concept of love was taken apart and remade as something that becomes an invisible line of thought through existence. Thus was born: .hop.skip.jump: With themes ranging from homosexuality to corporate-ism\, these plays bring together drama\, movement\, song\, visual art and poetry to give the audience an intimate theatre experience. \nDaddy Issues\nDirected by Hina Siddiqui \nThere are so many things a father and son share. But at times\, the things that they don’t become the real issue.\nWhat’s a child to do? What’s a dad to say? What difference does it make anyway? \nShaken or Stirred\nDirected by Jaideep Mujumdar \nYou know that moment of doubt we all experience\, just before we chose our path?\nWhat if your girlfriend and your boss decided to hold your hand through it? \nEnough? \nDirected by Mahrukh Bharucha \nThat moment between just right and too much\, when the mind can’t stop talking. Does it matter how much and how true we love? Is love really ever enough? \n  \nAbout Orchestrated Q’Works: \nOQ is a theatre company and artist’s collective that works to raise the creative consciousness of\nsociety through art and performance. SUMMARY:Opening of 'Amble - A series of ink drawing on paper'
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Unrehearsed Moments in Image Making \n \nAmble is a series of abstract drawings in ink on paper. The artist\, Ishita Dharap\, attempts to capture the lucidity of the moment an image is conceived. The spontaneity of creation is driven by a restless\, volatile energy. To hold it still and recreate the aesthetic decision is the challenge she celebrates as an image-maker. \nIshita Dharap: \n\nIshita Dharap studied interdisciplinary design at the Srishti School of Art\, Design and Technology\, Bangalore and graduated with a Diploma in Art and Design in 2012. Since then\, she has been drawing\, painting and freelancing in graphic design and illustration. She has had one dual show with her mother\, artist Sujata Dharap\, titled ‘Mother-Daughter I’\, earlier this year.\nIshita has been drawing and painting since she was a child. Drawing has always been her way of responding and reacting to the things happening around her. She is most at ease with ink on paper and so it was through this medium that she chose to explore and experience the nuances of how she creates her images. \nThe highlight of the opening will be a thought provoking discussion between artists of two generations – Sujata and Ishita Dharap. \nEntry Free \nThe exhibition will be on till Thursday\, December 11th\, 2014\nTime: 10 am to 6:30 pm \nFor more details call us on: 020-65217333

SUMMARY:Empty Café
DESCRIPTION:Indian Classical meets Blues-Jazz \nEmpty Café is a Fusion-Funk band and draws heavily from Indian Classical and blues-jazz. Empty Café as a band has been striving to create a new image for ‘fusion music’\, which is very different from the sound that most people associate with it. Tracks off their album were also aired on Los Angeles based radio ‘The Uprising’ KPFK 90.7 FM LA. They performed at the revival of the BandStand Culture in April 2013 to a highly delighted and enthusiastic crowd.\nBeing one of the most promising acts around\, Empty Café tends to blow away audiences with their unique sound and deep know how of two completely varied genres. \n  \n \nGandhaar Amin: Gandhaar\, a flautist born in a musically inclined family has been learning Indian Classical music since he was 5 years old from his father\, Nitin Amin\, who is a professional musician. He has also been learning from the acclaimed Indian Classical vocalist Padma Talwalkar for the past few years. He recently was a part of the team that worked on a Tamil song\, composed by the noted percussionist Sivamani. Gandhar is a flautist and composer with Empty Café. \nVinay Kaushal: Vinay is a composer\, guitar player and music educator. SUMMARY:Mi…Ghalib
DESCRIPTION:On the occasion of Mirza Ghalib’s birth anniversary\, Gyaan Adab presents Mi…Ghalib\, a play that traces the journey of a young playwright who attempts to portray the life of Mirza Ghalib in his words. The great poet guides him on a spiritual journey full of verses\, intoxication and conflict that seems to intertwine with the writer`s own. This play showcases a mixture of\, inspirations for writing the play\, Ghalib’s life\, his poems\, his confusions in life\, the defeats faced by Ghalib and the writer and most of the pilgrims on the spiritual path\, the art forms emerging from these frustrations and the same art forms posing as a distraction from the spiritual path\, and the desolation faced as a result of all this. The writer and Ghalib seem distinct at times\, at times co-travellers and at times united.\nLanguage: Hindi/ Urdu/ Marathi\nProduced by: Natak Company\, Pune\nWriter: Om Bhutkar\nDirector: Aalok Rajwade\nMusic compositions: Saaket Kanetkar and Jaydeep Vaidya \nDonation pass: 150/-
